Among the numerous installations on display at this year's Salone del Mobile in Milan, the “Pointillisme” project by Japanese architect and designer Taiju Yamashita stood out for its subtle elegance and deep reflection on the relationship between light, space and human experience.

Delicacy of light and material

The installation “Pointillisme” consisted of hundreds of crystal drops suspended in space, which, like points in the technique of pointillism, formed a three-dimensional composition. Each drop, suspended on almost invisible veins, reacted to the changing lighting, casting reflections and shadows on the surroundings. This effect gave the installation the impression of constant movement and changeability, engaging the viewer's senses and encouraging contemplation.

The designer's inspiration and philosophy

Taiju Yamashita, founder of the DRAFT studio, is known for designs that combine functionality with a deep understanding of human needs and emotions. His philosophy of “ALL HAPPY BY DESIGN” is to create spaces and objects that bring joy and comfort to users. In “Pointillisme,” Yamashita explores the boundaries between art and design, creating an installation that is both an aesthetic experience and a reflection on the nature of perception.

Reactions and meaning

The installation received an enthusiastic reception from critics and visitors alike. Its subtlety and poetic nature contrasted with the more expressive presentations, offering a moment of respite and reverie. “Pointillisme” is a reminder that design doesn't have to be flamboyant to be meaningful; sometimes it's silence and delicacy that have the greatest power of impact.

Yamashita's installation is a perfect example of how design can transcend the boundaries of function and aesthetics, becoming a medium for exploring human emotions and experiences. “Pointillisme” is not only a work of art, but also an invitation to reflect on how we perceive and experience the world around us.
